Unit 1 – significant moments in history – the sinking of The
Titanic. Students will largely focus on writing skills
– vocabulary work, effective writing skills, writing for different purposes and
text types, as well as discussion skills as part of talking and listening. In
library lessons we will be reading Michael Morpurgo’s Private Peaceful.

Unit 2: War and Conflict – Students
will be studying war poetry from different time periods with in introduction to
key terminology, they will also look at a drama script set during the war. They
will consider how rhetoric and bias are used in speeches.

SPRING |

Unit 3 – Extreme Sports. Students will read articles and opinion
pieces to find out about different extreme sports and why some people consider
them to be too dangerous. They will develop their reading and comprehension
skills, as well as their ability to form an argument and express that clearly.
They will also undertake some creative narrative writing and give an individual
presentation.

Unit 4 – Shakespeare ‘Magic and Mayhem’ – Students will learn about Shakespeare and why
his writing is still relevant today. They will study a range of excerpts from
different Shakespeare plays, watching and reading to learn about the language
and structure used in his writing. They will learn summarizing skills, role
play and study character.
